About driveway replacement

When replacement beats repair

A driveway is a candidate for replacement rather than repair once the damage is structural rather than surface. The tells are consistent: cracks wider than about a quarter inch that run the full width of the slab, sections that have settled so that one panel sits proud of the next, spalling that has exposed aggregate across large areas, or a slab that rocks underfoot when a vehicle rolls over it. Each of those points at a base problem. Resurfacing a slab whose base has failed buys a season or two at most, because the new surface inherits the same movement that broke the old one.

Tear-out and disposal

The existing slab is broken up and hauled off before anything else happens. This is the part homeowners tend to underestimate, and it is worth knowing what it involves so the quote makes sense. A four-inch residential driveway runs roughly 1.3 tons of concrete per 100 square feet, which means a typical two-car driveway generates somewhere between eight and fifteen tons of debris. That is disposal weight, and it is a real line item on any honest estimate. We break the slab in place, load out, and sweep the subgrade clean before the base goes in.

Base preparation

The base is the part of the job nobody sees and the part that determines how long the driveway lasts. Charlotte sits on Piedmont clay, which holds water and moves seasonally. Pouring straight onto undisturbed clay is the single most common reason a driveway in this region fails early. We excavate to grade, then place and compact a crushed aggregate base — typically four to six inches of ABC stone depending on what the subgrade looks like once it is open. The base is compacted in lifts rather than all at once, because a thick uncompacted layer will consolidate under load no matter how good the concrete on top of it is.

Thickness, reinforcement and jointing

Residential driveways are poured at four inches as standard. Where the drive carries heavier vehicles, or where a section doubles as a parking pad or turnaround, we go to five or six inches in that area rather than uniformly overbuilding the whole slab. Reinforcement is either fibre mesh through the mix or steel on chairs, chosen on the job rather than by default. Control joints are cut early, at spacing of roughly 10 to 12 feet for a four-inch slab. Concrete will crack; joints decide where. A driveway with too few joints, or joints cut too late, cracks wherever it likes.

What the timeline actually looks like

Tear-out and base prep usually take one day for a standard residential drive. The pour is a second day. After that the constraint is cure, not labour: foot traffic after 24 to 48 hours, passenger vehicles after seven days, and heavy vehicles after 28 days. Those windows are not padding. Concrete reaches roughly 70 percent of its design strength in the first week and the balance over the following three. Driving on a slab at day three is how a brand new driveway picks up cracks that were entirely avoidable.
