About parking pads & extensions
Extending an existing driveway
Adding to a driveway is more than pouring a rectangle alongside it. The new section has to tie into the old one in a way that lets the two move independently, because a fresh slab keyed rigidly to a twenty-year-old one will crack at the junction. We form an isolation joint at the interface, match thickness and elevation, and match the finish direction so the extension does not read as an obvious patch. Colour will never match exactly — new concrete is lighter and takes a year or more to weather toward the old slab — and anyone who tells you otherwise is overpromising.
Sizing a parking pad
A single parking space wants about 10 by 20 feet to be comfortable with doors opening. Two side by side want 20 by 20 as a minimum, and 22 feet of width is noticeably better if anyone in the household drives something wide. A turnaround needs more room than people expect: enough depth to get the front wheels around, which usually means 12 to 14 feet beyond the parking position.
RV, boat and trailer pads
These are a different spec entirely and it is worth being explicit about why. A loaded travel trailer or RV concentrates weight on a small number of axles and jack points, and can put several thousand pounds on a single stabiliser foot. A pad for that use gets six inches of concrete with steel reinforcement over a heavier compacted base, not the four inches that serves a car. Undersizing an RV pad produces cracking within the first season, and it cannot be repaired into adequacy afterwards.
Drainage and impervious area
Adding a large area of concrete changes where water goes on a property. Water that used to soak into lawn now runs somewhere, and if that somewhere is a neighbour's yard or the side of a foundation it becomes a problem you did not have before. We look at where a new pad drains before pouring it. On larger additions it is also worth checking local impervious-surface limits, which apply in parts of the Charlotte area and are easier to check beforehand than to remedy after.
Access for the pour
A pad in a back yard or behind a house may not be reachable by a mixer chute, which changes the method and the cost — pumping or buggying concrete is more labour than backing a truck to the forms. This is worth establishing at the quoting stage rather than on pour day, and it is one of the things we check on site rather than estimating from a satellite image.
